this is the failure of modern academia.

re-reading this, i did a terrible job explaining it. i get this email-magazine (which i suspect is merely a vehicle to sell advertisements, actually) every so often and in it there was a profile of vormstein. it was artkrush that said that he was moving towards the "grim goth images." nowhere did it even hint that the skull, which was utilized by a television show in the forties, long before it was used by the misfits, was appropriated at all. because it looks so *fucking* obvious to me, i couldn't believe that it wasn't mentioned. now, i wouldn't consider artkrush part of academia, or intelligensia, but i could see one of my professors making the same mistake. what follows is my original, frantic post.

this is a new piece by a sophisticated modern artist, gabriel vormstein.

is this or is this not the misfits skull?

yeah, this guy's moving on to "grim goth images." it's the FUCKING MISFITS SKULL. compare with exhibit a, which is: the misfits skull:

if we continue to ignore pop culture in our academic musings, and don't acknowledge popular influences, we WILL ONLY END UP LOOKING LIKE FUCKFACES.
